Raphael Glucksmann, a member of France’s left-wing Place Publique party, called for the United States to return the Statue of Liberty during a speech on Sunday.
This demand stemmed from his criticism of the U.S. approach towards the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Glucksmann, a firm supporter of Ukraine, addressed the issue during a party convention. “Return the Statue of Liberty,” he insisted, as reported by Agence France-Presse. He contended that the United States had strayed from the values symbolized by the statue, gifted by France in 1884 to celebrate Franco-American relations.
In his address, Glucksmann criticized President Trump’s domestic and international policies, which include withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, which Trump achieved through executive order shortly after resuming office in January. He pointed to Trump’s alliance with entrepreneur Elon Musk, who Glucksmann accused of reducing commitments to health and climate research.
